What is
Orthopaedics?
The American Board of Orthopaedic
Surgeons defines orthopaedics as "the medical specialty that includes
the prevention, investigation, and restoration of the form and function of
the extremities, spine and associated structures by medical, surgical and
physical methods."
Many patients referred to an
orthopaedist do not require surgery and are seen to assist other
physicians/providers in diagnosis and treatment of problems involving
bones, joints and associated structures. The orthopaedist can provide a
second opinion, or perform an examination for a legal report.
